Cal Women Defeat U. of Victoria and U. of British Columbia
March 24, 2003
BERKELEY - In their first competition this spring the Cal Women defeated both squads from Canada over 2000 meters Sunday while battling heavy headwinds. It was the first test for the Bears this spring, and with the victory they look forward to next weekend and the Windermere Crew Classic.
The Cal varsity eight and 2nd varsity eight stroked to double-digit time victories over both the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. The closest race of the day was between Cal's 3rd varsity eight and the U. of Victoria lightweight varsity eight. Cal edged the Vikes by 1.6 seconds.
CAL WOMEN'S CREW 2003: After its fourth-consecutive team invitation to the NCAA Championships Regatta, Cal women's crew is established as one of the premier programs in the country, and looks to challenge for the 2002 national title. Fifth-year head coach Dave O'Neill returns nearly his entire team from 2002, which placed third at NCAAs last May. The youth which marked last season has developed into experience, as 18 of the 20 rowers who competed at the 2002 NCAA Championships return. These athletes are more skilled and seasoned, and O'Neill is proud and impressed with the development of the squad.
