USC Rowing Begins Spring Racing Season This Week
March 24, 2003
LOS ANGELES, CA - The USC women's rowing team kicks off its 2003 spring season this week, when it travels to Redwood Shores to compete in the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30.
Hosted by Stanford and sponsored by Windermere Real Estate, the event will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 8:40 a.m. on Sunday. USC's first race will be the Varsity Eight competition on Saturday at 9:50 a.m. against Ohio State. The Women of Troy will later face Virginia's Varsity Eight at 3:20 p.m. and Michigan State on Sunday at 9:20 a.m.
USC will also field a JV Eight and Varsity Four boat. The novice will not compete, as there is no novice division.
The Trojans last raced Nov. 3 at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, where the Varsity Eight 'A' crew finished first by four seconds over second-place finisher Loyola Marymount, despite only having seven rowers due to a broken oar it suffered at the start of the race.
Under new head coaches Kelly and Zenon Babraj, the Women of Troy hope to improve on last season's eighth-place Varsity Eight finish at the NCAA Championships and fifth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships.
