COUGAR DIAMOND SUMMARY
WSU AT UC IRVINE FOR NON-CONFERENCE SERIES: The Washington State Cougars, 6-18, after going 2-3 last week in a five-game road trip that included one victory from Pacific-10 Conference rival California, return to non-conference action with a three-game series at UC Irvine (10-16) this weekend.Friday's first game begins at 6:00 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark, while games Saturday and Sunday are slated for 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. starts.
Last week, WSU split a two-game series with Portland and took one of three from California in the first Pac-10 series of the season for the Cougars.
Last week, the Anteaters played a three-game series with Washington, going 1-2 against the Huskies.Banaszak, a senior, has been WSU's hard luck pitcher. While posting a 3.99 ERA and making seven starts, he is winless. WSU has scored just 10 runs in games pitched by Banaszak, and five of those runs came in one game. In his last outing against California, he went 7.1 innings and allowed four runs in an 8-3 loss.
Bruce leads the team in home runs with three, doubles with six and hits with 29. He also leads the team with eight multiple-hit games and has the second longest hitting streak, seven games. Bruce's .523 slugging percentage is also tops on the team.
Hart and Bruce, have the longest current hitting streak, five games. Robert Stahlke's eight-game hitting streak is the best for the Cougars.
WSU RADIO: Cougar baseball games are carried on KCLX (1450AM, Colfax, Wash.) and on the WSU web site at www.wsucougars.com.
FARRAR RETURNS: Junior outfielder Jeremy Farrar, who suffered a broken bone in his left hand the week before the season opener, has returned to action after corrective surgery Friday, Feb. 14, in Spokane...he has seen action in WSU's last 11 games with eight starts in the outfield or as a DH...he is currently hitting .242....last year Farrar suffered a right knee injury in the opening game of the year and missed the rest of the season...Farrar transferred to WSU a year ago from Hill Junior College...he hails from Mansfield, Texas.
HART OF THE ORDER: Senior outfielder Justin Hart appears to have broken out of his early season slump...he is now leading the team with a .340 average and has a team-leading .421 on-base percentage...his .460 slugging percentage is third among regulars...in his last nine games, Hart is 12-for-26 (.462)...the Woodinville, Wash. native hit a team-leading .370 last season.
NO ORDINARY FRESHMAN: Freshman outfielder Jay Miller has had quite a start to his WSU career...the Bellevue, Wash, native arrived from Newport High School, one of the state's most storied programs...thus far, Miller is batting .250 in 18 starts and leads the team in walks (11) and doubles (6, tied with Derek Bruce)...he is second in runs scored (18).
Jon Baeder hits .333 with runners in scoring position, .412 with two outs and .667 when advancing runners...Derek Bruce is hitting .368 against left handed pitching and .319 against the right handers...he is hitting .442 when the bases are empty and .500 as a leadoff hitter...he hits .500 with runners on third and less than two outs, .370 with two outs and .381 when advancing runners...Wes Falkenborg, WSU's regular DH, is hitting .455 when he leads off an inning...Jeremy Farrar advances runners at a .412 percentage...Justin Hart hits .400 in limited action against left-handed pitchers and .333 against right handers...he is hitting .393 with the bases empty and .450 as a leadoff hitter...he also advances runners at a .522 percentage...Bruce Jacobsen is hitting .750 with runners at third and less than two outs, .318 with two outs, and .423 when advancing runners...Jeff LaRue has still not found his hitting stroke, but the senior is hitting .353 when leading off an inning...Zapper McGrath hits .333 against left-handed pitchers and .556 when in the leadoff spot...he is hitting .478 when advancing runners...Jay Miller does well against right-handed pitching, hitting .281...he is hitting. .312 with runners on base, .471 with runners in scoring position, a perfect 1.000 with runners at third and less than two outs (5-for-5) and .543 while advancing runners...Dustin Realini is hitting .375 against left-handed pitchers...Brandon Reddinger is hitting .300 with runners on base...Grant Richardson hits .316 against left-handers and .291 when right-handed pitchers are on the mound...he hits .410 with runners on base and .300 when leading off an inning...he also hits .409 with runners in scoring position, .778 with runners at third and less than two outs, .500 with two outs, and .488 when advancing runners...Robert Stahlke hits .500 in the leadoff position and .292 with runners on base...he is hitting .500 as a pinch hitter, .440 when advancing runners and .294 with runners in scoring position.
RICHADSON STEPS UP PLAY: First baseman Grant Richardson has stepped up his play from last year when he started just 14 games and hit .245...this year he is hitting .297, third-best on the team, with 22 hits (second on the team) and a team-leading 18 RBI.
BACK ON THE MOUND: Despite his 0-6 record, senior pitcher Tony Banaszak has made a tremendous turnaround from this time last season...the Puyallup native sat out the 2002 season after undergoing 'Tommy John' surgery on his elbow...Banaszak has made six starts this year and leads the Cougar pitching staff with a 3.99 ERA...his 47.1 innings pitched ranks sixth in the Pac-10...unfortunately, in his six starts, WSU has been shut out three times (4-0 each time) and lost a 7-1 outing and a 6-5 outing...in his seven games the Cougars have scored just 10 runs and hit .184 (41-for-223)...only once has WSU had more than six hits in a game in which he has pitched (nine against Washington).
AT YOUR OWN RISK: Senior catcher Jon Baeder has made base runners a little leery about stealing this season. Baeder has thrown out 12 of the 22 runners who have attempted to steal on him... Baeder is also having a stellar all-around showing defensively, committing no errors in 109 chances this season...At the plate, Baeder is batting .250 with five RBI.
In 2002 outfielder Collin Henderson turned out for baseball for the first time since his high school days and ended the year hitting .297 with 24 RBI...his best series came against Arizona near the end of the year when he hit .455 and belted a game-winning, bases loaded double in the ninth inning of game three, providing WSU with a 9-7 win...Henderson was a three-year starting wide receiver for the Cougar football team...he ended his football career last fall with 62 career receptions for 566 yards...he also completed 11 of 12 career passes for 499 yards and six touchdowns.
