No. 12 Cardinal Split At Fresno State
March 26, 2003
Fresno, Calif. - Cassi Brangham's (Clovis, CA) hit in the fourth inning was all the offense the Cardinal needed as the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Fresno State 1-0 in the nightcap on Wednesday night at Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs (16-15) beat the Cardinal (25-9) in first game, 2-0, to record a split.
After getting shutout in the first game, the Stanford bats came alive in the nightcap. Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) led the game off with a single and Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) added a double in the second. The Cardinal kept pressuring, and finally put a string of hits together in the fourth.
Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) smacked a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on Jessica Allister's (Nacogdoches, TX) sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Brangham delivered the game-winning base hit that plated Ching for the 1-0 Stanford lead. LeCocq followed with her second hit of the game and Fresno State starter Leslie Poole got Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana,CA) to line out to the third baseman and end the inning.
LeCocq got her third hit in as many tries in the top of the seventh to right field, marking Stanford's sixth hit of the game. Starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) retired the Bulldogs in order to get the Stanford win, 1-0.
Nyberg picked up her 12th win of the season, scattering two hits and fanning four Fresno batters.
The Bulldogs struck first in the opening contest, earning the game's first two and only runs in the first inning. Lori Hoffman knocked a single down the left field line, scoring Christina Clark and Angelina Diaz. Stanford starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) then settled down and fanned the next three Fresno State batters to get out of the inning.
The rest of the game turned into a defensive and pitching battle. The Cardinal's only hit of the game came from Morris to start the game. Fresno State managed only two more hits off Sorensen in the hour and 25 minute contest. Sorensen took the loss for Stanford, falling to 10-3. She finished with eight strikeouts and scattered four hits. Jamie Southern got the win for the Bulldogs, allowing only one hit and fanning 11 Cardinal batters.
Stanford opens its Pac-10 season on Friday night when they host top-ranked UCLA at 7 p.m. at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal will then play No. 2 Washington on Saturday night at 7 p.m. and conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
