No. 7 Cal Goes Yard Twice in 6-2 Win Past UC Santa Barbara
March 26, 2003
In its last preseason game of the year, the seventh-ranked California softball team capitalized off Veronica Nelson and Eryn Manahan's home runs to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 6-2, Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 28-7 as the Gauchos fall to 23-10 overall.
After a shaky start that resulted in a first inning 2-0 lead by Santa Barbara off two singles and two Cal throwing errors, the Bears settled down, collecting their first run of the game in the third inning. Senior Kristen Morley walked, advancing to second off Vicky Galindo's ground out to shortstop. Cal's first hit of the game came from Lindsay James who beat out an infield single, forcing a throwing error by UCSB's first baseman that allowed Morley to score from second, evening the score to 2-1.
Cal carried the game away in the fourth, led off by Nelson's ninth home run of the year, a 230-foot shot to dead center. Sophomore Kaleo Eldredge followed the blast up with a base hit up the middle, advancing to second by shortstop Chelsea Spencer's sacrifice bunt, her first of two of the day. Right fielder Jessica Pamanian reached on a fielding error by UCSB's first baseman, stealing second to have runners on second and third, one out and Manahan up to the plate. The second baseman from Tustin, CA cranked the pitch to left center, nailing the scoreboard for her third home run of the season, giving Cal a 5-2 lead it would not relinquish.
The Bears added an insurance run in the fifth off an RBI single by Manahan for the eventual final score of 6-2.
Sophomore hurler Cassie Bobrow collected the win, setting her record at 2-0 for the season. Bobrow shut down the Gauchos lineup in order three of the six innings she pitched, allowing four hits, two unearned runs, no walks and six strikeouts. Senior Jen Deering entered the circle in the seventh, forcing two fly balls and a grounder to end the game. UCSB's Loren Thornburg lasted 3.1 innings on the mound before relief came from Carly Harmon (2.2 innings, three hits, one run, one walk, one strikeout). Thornburg fell to 11-7 for the season, allowing five runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Cal received multiple hit performances from Galindo (2-for-4) and Manahan (2-for-3, 1 run, 4 RBIs) while Nelson batted a perfect 1-for-1 with two walks. Santa Barbara's leadoff batter Leslie Simien paced its attack, batting 2-for-3 with one run.
Next up, the Golden Bears open up Pac-10 play, hosting No. 2 Washington, Friday, March 28 at 2 p.m., and No. 1 UCLA Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
