No. 24 UW Opens Pac-10 Play At No. 8 Stanford
March 27, 2003
This Week: The 24th-ranked Washington baseball team (18-7) closes its spring break road trip this week by opening Pac-10 Conference play with a three-game series at No. 8 Stanford (16-8, 2-1 in Pac-10). Friday's opener starts at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday's games begin at 1:00 p.m. All three will air live on KKNW AM-1150 as well as over the internet via gohuskies.com. The Huskies took two of three at UC Irvine last weekend and swept a two-game series at Portland in mid-week. Washington has now won 14 of its last 15 games and earned rankings of No. 24 (Baseball America) and No. 30 (Collegiate Baseball) this week. The UW returns home April 1 for an exhibition game vs. British Columbia. Then, Oregon State comes to Husky Ballpark April 4-6 for a three-game Pac-10 series. Here's a look at this weekend's games at Stanford, with probable starting pitchers:
Fri., Mar. 28: UW at Stanford, 6:00 p.m. -- RHP Sean White (3-3, 5.18)Sat., Mar. 29: UW at Stanford, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Jeff Petersen (1-2, 4.01)Sun., Mar. 30: UW at Stanford, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Trevor Gibson (3-0, 1.47)
Series History: Stanford leads the all-time series against the Huskies, 29-11, though recent years have been more kind to Washington. The UW beat Stanford in the 1997 Pac-10 Championship series (two games to one) and then again in 1998, sweeping in two games. Last year at Husky Ballpark, the Huskies took a three-game series with a pair of wins. In the opener, Shawn Kohn went the distance in a 3-1 win. Down 1-0 in the seventh, RBI singles from Aaron Hathaway and Greg Isaacson gave the Huskies a lead. In game two, Washington led 4-2, but Stanford scored seven runs over the last three innings to win, 9-4. In game three, the Huskies won, 4-3, on a Kyle Larsen RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning. UW was down 3-1 entering the eighth, but a Hathaway homer got a rally started to tie it. Kohn got his second win of the weekend with two innings of relief.
Coach 'K': In 10-plus seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, Ken Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two second-place finishes and four NCAA Regionals. His career overall record stands at 365-242-1 (.601). With those 365 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 175-78-1 (.691) record in home games. He is 152-106 (.589) in conference games. Knutson has coached 37 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 10 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Jeremiah Porter.

Earlier This Week: After returning from a two-games-to-one series win at UC Irvine, the Huskies travelled to face Portland in a pair of non-conference games. In the first game, sophomore Josh Conover picked up a win in his first career start as Washington cruised to a 13-1 win. Second baseman Greg Isaacson belted a first-inning homer and finished the game 3-for-6 with a homer and two doubles. In game two, the Huskies used four homers and a solid outing from starter Clay Johnson in a 10-3 win. Chad Boudon's two-run homer in the first, his seventh of the season, got it started and the Huskies ended up getting additional HRs from Ben Johnson, John Otness and Brent Lillibridge, the first of the year for each and the first of Lillibridge's career.
No Streak? Still Hot: Washington had strung together an 11-game win streak before losing to UC Irvine this past Saturday. That 11-game win streak tied for the longest single-season winning streak in Husky coach Ken Knutson's 11-year tenure as the UW head man. In 1997, the Dawgs strung together a pair of 11-game streaks. Washington also had a 10-game win streak to start the 1994 season, Knutson's second as head coach, and seeing as the 1993 team won its last five, that streak was technically 15 games, though over the two seasons. The longest winning streak in Husky history was in 1979, when the UW won 19 in a row. In 1985, the Huskies won 13 in a row. However, the recent 11-game streak is the longest in school history against all Division I opposition. Despite the loss, the Huskies are still 14-1 over their last 15. Over that 15-game stretch, the Huskies have batted .314 and out-scored opponents, 130-54. The Huskies have hit 25 home runs in those 15 games while opponents have only three. Over that stretch, the Husky pitching staff has a collective 2.55 earned run average and has allowed only 99 hits while fanning 139 over 134 innings pitched.
Outstanding In The Field: Washington is having one of its best years ever in terms of its defense. Through 25 games, the Huskies are fielding .976 and have made only 23 errors. The Huskies have played error-free in 16 of 25 games so far and Washington infielder have committed only 12 errors all season. By way of comparison, South Carolina led the NCAA with a .975 fielding percentage last season.
