No. 4 Bears Cruise Past No. 18 Harvard, 6-1, Extend Win Streak to Eight
March 27, 2003
Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 4 California women's tennis team (13-2, 1-0, Pac-10) continued its dominance at the Hellman Tennis Courts this afternoon, March 26, claiming it's 35th consecutive victory against a non-conference opponent at home, as the Bears cruised past the No. 18 Harvard Crimson, 6-1. California has now won eight straight contests, improves to 8-0 at home this season and owns a 7-0 all-time record vs. Harvard.
All three courts of doubles competition were tightly contested matches, with all three Cal teams trailing at one point in their respective matches. On court No. 2, Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt found themselves in an off-balance matchup against Sanja Bajin and Alexis Martire, with both sides breaking each other's service on multiple occasions. Tied at 2-2, Cal broke Harvard's serve to take the 3-2 lead and then got back on track as Jacobs won her service game to take the 4-2 lead. The Bear tandem extended their margin to 6-3 and rallied for the 8-5 victory. Court No. 3 was not as off tilt as number two, but the result was much the same as Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch took on Melissa Anderson and Eva Wang. On serve through eight games at 4-4, the match was dead even until Cal was able to claim a service break and a 5-4 lead. Up 6-5, the Bear team rattled off two straight games leading to another 8-5 victory to secure the doubles point for the Golden Bears.
On doubles No. 1, the 5th-ranked duo of Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones found themselves in a dogfight with Harvard's top tandem of No. 32 Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman. The Bears opened up a quick 2-0 lead, but too many unforced errors and strong play from the Crimson resulted in a second set tiebreaker. In extra play, the Cal pair took a 4-0 advantage and ultimately the victory with a 9-8 (7-3) final score and their sixth consecutive victory.
The Bears took to the singles courts like a team on a mission, recording victories on five of the six courts. No. 9 Kops-Jones joined the 10-win club and extended her win streak to three, with her 6-4, 6-5 decision over No. 43 Bergman on court one. The senior captain No. 36 Fusano also claimed her third consecutive victory in a 7-6(3), 6-4 hard-fought victory over No. 110 Susanna Lingman on court No. 2. The 57th-ranked Jacobs dropped Alexis Martire on court three with a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Jacobs improves to 3-0 on court No. 3 this season, extends her win streak to seven straight and leads the team in overall wins with a 23-6 record. On court No. 6, Scheldt was also in the midst of a win streak of her own, entering the match in a stretch of five straight. The junior from San Diego kept the streak alive in claiming her 10th victory of the season with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision over freshman Melissa Anderson.
On the same day that Cal's Lynch broke the Top 100 in the ITA rankings, the 90th-ranked junior from Dublin, Ireland claimed one of her biggest victories of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 stomping of the nation's 69th-ranked player in freshman Eva Wang. The match was her first appearance on No. 4 singles this season.
The only blemish to Cal's almost perfect afternoon was on court five, as two Canadians matched up. Cal's Havlicek and Harvard's Sanja Bajin, both from Ontario, hooked up in a three-set thriller. Unfortunately for the Bears, Havlicek came out on the losing end of a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision, snapping her victorious streak at four.
Cal returns to action Wednesday, March 26 when it hosts Harvard in a noon matchup at Hellman Tennis Courts in Berkeley.
