March 28, 2003
Tucson, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team was forced to come from behind in windy conditions Friday, rallying for a 5-2 victory over Arizona at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 play. Arizona drops to 5-7 and 0-1 in conference action.
Not accustomed to the high desert winds, UCLA lost the doubles point after a pair of Arizona victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 courts. It marked only the second time this season that the Bruins failed to claim the one point awarded for doubles play.
UCLA adjusted in singles play and quickly tied the match at one apiece when Bruin junior Marcin Matkowski defeated Carl Hagman, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 court. Senior Erfan Djahangiri then put the Bruins ahead 2-1 with his 6-3, 6-0 decision over Paul Warkentin at the No. 3 position.
Sophomore Chris Lam was next to finish, registering a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Colin O'Grady in the No. 5 spot. UCLA clinched the match at the No. 4 position, where Rodrigo Grilli posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Arizona's Roger Matalonga.
With the match already decided, UCLA's Lassi Ketola was upset at the No. 6 spot, falling to Daniel Andrus, 6-2, 6-1.
UCLA's top player Tobias Clemens was the last to finish, downing Arizona's Whi Kim, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles slot.
Friday marked the second time this season that UCLA defeated Arizona, as the Bruins registered a 7-0 decision back on Feb. 15 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. That match did not count in the Pac-10 standings.
Up next for UCLA is a dual with Arizona State tomorrow in Tempe, Ariz. Match time is scheduled for Noon (MST). The Bruins defeated the Sun Devils, 6-1 back on Feb. 14 in Los Angeles.
