March 28, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 22 Oregon State softball team dropped an 8-0 five-inning game to No. 3 University of Arizona on Friday night in Tucson.
With the loss, Oregon State falls to 22-14 on the season and 0-2 in Pacific-10 Conference action while Arizona improves to 32-3 overall and 1-0 in Pac-10 play. The loss marked the 11th consecutive for the Beavers against the Wildcats.
The Wildcats jumped in front early and never looked back. Arizona picked up three runs in the opening inning behind a three-run two-out blast to left-center field by Jackie Coburn. The long ball was Coburn's 10th of the season.
Beaver starter Monica Hoffman (16-9) settled in after giving up the home run and retired seven in a row until allowing a pair of walks and a double to Coburn in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats added one run in the frame when Lisha Ribellia reached base on an error and Mackenzie Vandergeest scored.
Freshman Amy Klever entered the game in the fifth inning for the Beavers, allowing four hits and four runs as Ribellia's two-out RBI double to center field ended the game.
UA hurler Alicia Hollowell completely shut down the OSU offense, tossing a no-hitter and striking out eight in the five-inning contest.
Oregon State searches for its first Pac-10 victory when the Beavers meet No. 13 Arizona State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Tempe, AZ.
