No. 4 Bears Defeat No. 10 Washington, 5-2, Extend Win Streak to Nine
March 28, 2003
Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 4 California women's tennis team (14-2, 2-0, Pac-10) continued its dominance at the Hellman Tennis Courts this afternoon, March 28, improving to 9-0 at home this season with a 5-2 victory over the No. 10 Washington Huskies. The Bears have posted nine straight wins while improving to 2-0 in Pac10 competition.
For the second straight match, the doubles competition has been a heated battle for the Cal squad. All three courts opened play with service breaks. On the top court, the 5th-ranked tandem of Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano matched up against Washington's top duo of No. 11 Claire Carter and Darija Klaic for the third time this year. After being swept in the previous two matches, Kops-Jones and Fusano got some revenge. After falling behind 3-1 early, the Cal duo fought back to claim seven straight games for the 8-3 victory and their 20th of the year. On court No. 3, Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch also fell behind early, handing Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri the 3-2 advantage. Just like their counterparts on court one, the Cal tandem took three consecutive games and the 5-3 lead. The service break seemed to haunt the Husky duo as Cal cruised to the 8-5 victory to secure the doubles point.
On court No. 2, a fierce battle was being waged as Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt were in a dog fight with Dinka Hadzic and Erin Hoe. The two teams battled to an 8-8 tie and entered the deciding tiebreaker. With the doubles point already in hand, both sides were playing for personal pride. Cal jumped out to the quick 2-0 lead, but Washington fought back to force a second 8-8 tie. This time, though, Jacobs took the next two service points for the 9-8, (10-8) victory and the doubles sweep.
The Bears carried the momentum on to the singles courts, claiming four of the six matches. Junior All-American No. 9 Kops-Jones was facing her fourth consecutive Top 50 opponent in as many tries, and once again walked away with the victory. The Fresno native faced some resistance in the first set, until breaking Carter to take the 5-3 lead and the first set, 6-4. Kops-Jones made it look easy, completing a 6-4, 6-3 victory for her fourth in a row. On court two, Fusano was facing a stiff test in No. 45 Dea Sumantri. The 36th-ranked Fusano fell down 5-0 in the first set of what looked to be a blowout from the start. But in typical dramatic fashion from the senior captain, she rallied to tie the set at 5-5 before ultimately falling 7-5. It proved to be a backbreaker as Sumantri rolled to the 7-5, 6-3 victory to give the Huskies a glimmer of hope.
After cruising to a 6-1 first set, No. 57 Jacobs slipped the second stanza to force a third set. The junior regained her poise and closed out a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win for her eighth in a row. Right next door on court four, No. 90 Lynch was having trouble with her opponent, Erin Boisclair. Washington took the first set, 6-1, and never looked back, claiming the 6-1, 6-2 victory and the second point of the day for the Huskies. That was all that Washington would see in the win column as Havlicek and Scheldt came out on the winning end of three-set thrillers.
After getting blown out 6-2 in the first set, Havlicek narrowly claimed the second and third sets and the 2-6, 7-7 (7-3), 6-4 decision over Colleen Gray. On court No. 6, Scheldt posted her seventh consecutive victory with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2 nailbiter over Dinka Hadzic.
Cal returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 29 when it hosts the final game of this nine-match homestand against Washington State in a noon matchup at Hellman Tennis Courts in Berkeley.
