Beavers Beaten 8-6 To Even Series With Cal

March 29, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Kenny Anderson had a solid outing in the first pitching start of his career but California rallied to beat the Beavers 8-6 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Bears used a four-run sixth inning to even the teams' series at one game apiece.

OSU (13-12 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10) and Cal (16-13, 3-2) will play the deciding game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Beaver ballpark. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Anderson, a sophomore righthander, gave up three runs on five hits and four walks, striking out two in 4 2/3 innings. Prior to Saturday, his OSU career had consisted of 12 relief appearances but he liked the adjustment.

'After the first inning, I felt comfortable,' Anderson said. 'It's the first career start - you've got to start somewhere. You get to make your own pressure when you're starting; you know in advance when you're going to pitch. It's a lot more relaxing.'

Anderson allowed a run in the first inning on three groundball singles, two of which didn't leave the infield.

'It was a little frustrating to let them get on base that way,' Anderson said. 'I just tried to keep making pitches after that.'

Anderson gave up a run with two out in the third on a hit batter and Jeff Nelson's double to the fence in right-center; he then allowed another score in the fourth inning when he hit the final two batters he faced to force in a run.

'I've got to build up, but I felt all right for a first start,' Anderson said. Mike Ekstrom, another sophomore righthander, relieved Anderson and got a groundout to end the inning with the bases still full of Bears to keep OSU's lead at 5-3.

Cal got to Ekstrom in the top of the sixth, though, scoring four times on three hits, a walk and a hit batter. Conor Jackson's two-run single tied the game with one out, Chris Grossman's groundout drove in a run to give the Bears a 6-5 lead; and James Holder's run-scoring single made it 7-5.

OSU got back within 6-5 on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth but stranded a runner at third base. The Beavers also had runners at first and second with one out in the eighth, but Cal closer Jesse Ingram didn't allow them to advance any further. The Bears added an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning for insurance.

Oregon State had gone up 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning on three hits, a hit batter and a walk. Chris Biles' groundout plated Jacoby Ellsbury with the tying run, then Levi Webber doubled just inside the rightfield line to score two more runs. OSU made it 5-1 in the bottom of the second when Ellsbury singled with one out and Chris Kunda drew a walk, then Biles and Seth Pietsch delivered run-scoring singles.

Ellsbury was 2-for-4 for the Beavers. Nathan Pendley pitched 1 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings and Ty Kline, making his second appearance in as many days after not playing during winter term, did not allow an earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Biles extended his hitting streak to seven games and Kunda improved his string to six games, while Andy Jarvis had a six-game streak snapped.

David Nicholson was the only Bear with more than one hit, going 2-for-4. Reliever Brent Hale earned the win, upping his record to 1-2 as he pitched 1 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run; Ingram picked up his fifth save of the season for working the final three innings.
