Stanford Rally Sinks UW Baseball, 10-6

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 8 Stanford scored six runs in the eighth inning to break a 4-4tie and handed the No. 24 Washington baseball team a 10-5 loss in the second game of athree-game Pac-10 series at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal win evened the series at onewin apiece.

Stanford scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, then burst out with sevenhits to take the lead in the eighth. Sam Fuld led off with a double and Brian Hall reached ona bunt single. Right fielder Carlos Quentin followed with a double off the left-field wall,driving in Putnam. After an intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs, pinch hitterDonny Lucy blooped a single over the drawn-in UW infield to send home another runner.

John Mayberry Jr., the Seattle Mariners' first-round draft pick last June, followed Lucy'shit with a sacrifice fly and, after a popout, Tobin Swope singled home two more runs andFuld drove in another with a single to stretch the Cardinal lead to 10-4.

In the ninth, the Huskies had a fifth run across and the bases loaded with none out. Afterfreshman reliever Kodiak Quick came, Kyle Larsen singled home the UW's sixth run, butQuick struck out Mike Wagner and Taylor Johnson and got Aaron Hathaway to groundinto a forceout to end the game and earn his third save of the season.

UW reliever David Dowling (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three runson four hits in his one-inning-plus of work. Cardinal reliever David O'Hagan (3-1) gave uptwo runs on two hits over two-plus innings to pick up the win.

The Huskies (19-8 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10) drew first blood with a run in the secondinning. Junior DH Mike Wagner lined a double to center field to open the inning and, aftera pair of flyouts, scored on a two-out single from left fielder Chad Boudon. The Huskieshad gone 14-0 in games in which they'd scored the first run prior to Saturday's loss.

Stanford (17-9, 3-2) came back to take its first lead of the series with a pair of runs in thefourth. Danny Putnam and John Mayberry Jr. got the inning started with back-to-backsingles, with Mayberry moving to second base on a throw to third. Third baseman JonnyAsh followed with a single up the middle to drive in both runners, giving the Cardinal a 2-1edge.

Washington stormed back in the sixth. With two outs, Taylor Johnson reached on a singleto start the rally. Hathaway followed with his second home run of the season to put theUW back on top. On the next pitch from Stanford starter Ryan McCally, Boudonhammered a line-drive homer over the scoreboard in left. The homer was the ninth of theyear for the junior from Shorewood High. All nine homers have come in the last 17 games,during which the UW has gone 15-2.

In the seventh, the Cardinal tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs. Ryan Garko led offwith a single and moved to third on a pair of Dowling wild pitches. Mayberry narrowlymissed a homer, belted a one-out double off the top of the left-field fence to drive in Garko.Mayberry moved to third on a groundout and then scored when shortstop Tobin Swopesingled.

John Otness, the Husky third baseman, went 4-for-4 with a double in the game whileReynolds had three hits. Mayberry, Fuld and Jed Lowrie each had three hits for Stanford.
