Sun Devil Women's Track and Field Shines at Arizona State Invitational

March 29, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field team competed at home for the third time this outdoor season as it played host to the 2003 Arizona State Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium Saturday evening. Kansas State, Ohio State and Northern Arizona were on hand as the Sun Devil women won nine events and earned 14 NCAA regional qualifying marks and 11 Pac-10 marks. The men, winners of four events, secured six regional berths and five spots in the conference meet.

Porchea Carroll led the way for the women with wins in the 100m dash and the long jump as the runners showcased their strength. Of the nine wins, eight came on the track with wins in both relays, three distance races and all three of the short sprints. Winning for the women were Cody Sohn in the 2,000m steeplechase, Joni Smith in the 400m dash, Lisa Aguilera in the 800m run, Tiffany Greer in the 200m dash and Amanda Lyon in the 3,000m run.

On the men's side, the runners took top billing in three of the four ASU victories with half the wins coming in the relay events. Individually, Kris Alexander took the top spot in the 2,000m steeplechase while Lee Bartes captured the 400m intermediate hurdle event.

Though the runners fared better in the standings, three throwers moved up in the Arizona State record books with their performances. For the men, Travis Jones threw the hammer 56.23m (184-6) to move into the No. 6 spot all-time at ASU. Molly Clarke followed suit in the women's hammer as she recorded a 38.12m (125-1) mark in the event to move into No. 6 as well. In the women's shot put, Sandra Orsund claimed the No. 8 spot with a throw of 14.74 (48-4.50).

Next up for the Sun Devils is a weekend trip to Los Angeles for the UCLA Invitational April 4-5.
