Trojans Even Pac-10 Series With 6-5 Win Against No. 3 Arizona State
March 29, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Junior second baseman Jon Brewster delivered a two-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth Saturday and the USC Trojans upset the No. 3 Arizona State Sun Devils, 6-5, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. The win snapped the Trojans' four-game losing streak and evens the conference series at one game apiece.
USC improves to 14-15 overall and 2-3 in Pac-10 play while Arizona State falls to 33-6 overall with a similar 2-3 Pac-10 record.
Travis McAndrews led off the Trojans' ninth with a leadoff single up the middle against ASU's Ryan Schroyer (4-2). Anthony Lunetta reached on a fielder's choice that retired McAndrews at second. Freshman catcher Jeff Clement hit a double to left center that bounced over the wall for a ground rule double as Lunetta was rounding third. After Joey Metropoulos was intentionally walked, ASU brought in reliever Bryce Kartler. Michael Moon hit a ground ball to ASU first baseman Jeff Larish, who threw to the plate to retire Lunetta. Brewster then hit a long fly ball to right center to end the game.
Fraser Dizard (3-2) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He hit the first batter he faced in the top of the eighth to load the bases, but struck out Andre Ethier looking. The Sun Devils stranded 12 runners after leaving 17 on base in last night's 11-4 win.
The Trojans took the lead in the first when McAndrews hit the first pitch by Erik Averill and tripled down the right field line. Lunetta followed with a first pitch double down the left field line. Averill, who entered the game with a 2.20 ERA, gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
With a 1-1 tie in the fourth, ASU led off the inning with back-to-back doubles by Travis Buck and Steve Garrabrants. Buck went 3-for-3 for the Sun Devils. Garrabrants' doubled scored Buck and Ryan Bosch's sacrifice fly to left scored Garrabrants.
Down 3-2 in the sixth, Moon led off the inning with his third home run of the season with a solo shot to right. Designated hitter Spencer Gordon put the Trojans ahead with a two-run shot to left with his first of the year.
Lunetta went 2-for-5 and now has an eight-game hitting streak, batting .500 (16-for-32) during that time. He has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games (.431 average).
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
