No. 2 Softball Drops To No. 12 Stanford, 4-0
March 30, 2003
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 2-ranked Washington softball team (32-4-1) lost to No. 12 Stanford (26-11), 4-0, Sunday behind the pitching efforts of Dena Sorenson. Sorenson, who one-hit the Huskies earlier this month, tossed a no-hitter this afternoon.
The Cardinal loaded the bases in the first and second innings but the Huskies worked their way out of the jams unscathed. Washington's luck wore out in the third frame when Stanford loaded the bags on two UW errors and a fielder's choice. After junior hurler Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) froze Elizabeth Bendig on strikes, Meghan Sickler hit a double into the left field corner, which scored two more runs to put the Cardinal on top, 3-0.
Stanford added to its lead in the fifth inning with a two-out solo home run over the right centerfield wall by Leah Nelson.
Bollinger (17-3) took the loss for the Dawgs as she gave up eight hits, while striking out six. Sorenson struck out 11 batters and her only blemish of the game was a fifth inning walk to Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.).
The Huskies return to action on Friday, April 4, when they host a 2 p.m., game versus Arizona State. It will be Washington's first home game of the season.
