Sorensen Tosses No-Hitter, Stanford Wins 4-0
March 30, 2003
Stanford, Calif. - Junior Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) fanned 11 batters en route to her second no-hitter of the year and eight different Cardinal recorded hits as the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team upset No. 2 Washington 4-0 on 'Strikeout Cancer Day' at Smith Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal pick up their first conference win to move to 1-2 in the Pac-10 and 26-11 overall.
Stanford threatened in the first and second innings, loading the bases each time but could not get a run across. Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA), Katherine Hoffman (Kansas City, MO) and Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) each singled in the second, but were left stranded.
The Cardinal then erupted for three runs in the third. With one out and the bases loaded, Leah Nelson (Oakland, CA) was hit by a Tia Bollinger pitch that scored Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA). Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) then delivered a pinch-hit double to left field plating Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) and Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) for the 3-0 Stanford lead.
Sorensen continued to retire Husky batter after batter, but did give up a walk in the fifth inning to Kristen Rivera. The defense came through, recording a double play to end the inning. Sorensen faced the minimum 21 batters en route to her no-hitter.
Nelson added an insure run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo shot to center field. The hit marked Nelson's first home run of the season and a 4-0 Cardinal advantage.
With the win, Sorensen moves to 11-4 on the year, and has her second no-hitter of the 2003 season.
Stanford will take a break from Pac-10 play when they travel to Sacramento for a doubleheader against Sacramento State on Wednesday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
