Varsity Eight Wins All Three Races At Windermere Crew Classic

March 30, 2003

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- The USC women's rowing team kicked off the 2003 spring season with strong performances at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic held at Redwood Shores, Calif., on Saturday and Sunday (March 28-29). The Women of Troy's Varsity Eight boat dominated against field, winning all three of its races.

The two-day rowing regatta featured many of the nation's top collegiate crew teams in Henley-style lightweight women's, open women's and men's events. More than 50 individual races will took place, ending with Sunday's awards ceremony.

USC faced Ohio State in the morning session on Saturday, then raced Virginia in the afternoon. The Trojans began day by taking an early lead against the Buckeyes and did not allow OSU to close the gap, crossing the finish line in 6:25.41. The Buckeyes finished in 6:30.52. Facing a stuff headwind that afternoon, USC pulled away from Virginia in the final 1000 meters to reach the finish first in a time of 6:49.20, ahead of the Cavaliers who finished in 6:56.20.

The JV Eight boat managed to split the morning races, defeating Ohio State but falling to Virginia. The Trojans also raced a Varsity Four boat but finished second in both outings.

Under sunny skies with calm waters on Sunday, USC completed the Varsity Eight sweep by defeating Michigan State in a time of 6:30.34. The Spartans finished in 6:33.91. The Women of Troy's JV Eight and Varsity Four boats struggled on the final day and finished behind MSU in both races.
