Cougars Down Gonzaga 8-6
April 1, 2003
SPOKANE, Wash. -- - Washington State got four hits from Jeremy Farrar in an 8-6 non-conference win against Gonzaga Tuesday at August/A.R.T. Field. The win was the fourth in the last five games for WSU.
Brett Beetham (1-1) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits to notch the win for the Cougars (9-19). Nick Kenyon pitched the ninth to record his second save of the season. Ed Clelland (2-2) tossed three innings, surrendering three runs on five hits in the losing effort for the Bulldogs (12-14-1).
Farrar was 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in three runs, all on his first home run of the season, a shot to left field in the top of the fourth inning. Grant Richardson also added three RBI on his third home run on the season in the first inning. Three Gonzaga players had multiple-hit games.
Richardson's blast in the first came with no outs, as Farrar and Jay Miller came home on his homer. Farrar's homer in the fourth came with two outs and plated Dustin Realini and Jonathan Fender, giving the Cougars a 6-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to chase Cougar starter James Freeman form the game, and one in the fifth, cutting the WSU lead to 6-5. Freeman had pitched hitless ball until the fourth.
The Cougars added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take an 8-5 lead. In the sixth, Justin Hart, who reached on catcher's interference and advanced to third base on a Realini single, scored on a throwing error by Gonzaga first baseman Gordon Corder.
In the eighth, Hart again manufactured a run, reaching on a walk. He then stole second base and advanced to third on wild pitch, before scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Realini.
Following the top of the seventh inning, home plate umpire Steve Sillers ejected WSU Coach Tim Mooney and Beetham from the game. Beetham was tossed because of a comment from the Cougar dugout, which Sillers could not attribute to a particular player. Mooney argued the umpire's decision and was also ejected.
The Bulldogs got one run in the ninth, but Kenyon came in ended the Gonzaga rally.
