Lorenzo in Third Place in Texas Relays Decathlon at Halfway Point

April 2, 2003

AUSTIN, Texas - In his first decathlon in more than 1 1/2 years, University of Oregon decathlete Santiago Lorenzo stood in third place with 3,961 points at the halfway point in opening day action in the Texas Relays Wednesday, held at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.

The Ducks' redshirt senior and Buenos Aires, Argentina native posted a pair of personal bests in Wednesday's initial five events - the 100 (10.87w, +5.0 mps wind) and the long jump (23-9 1/2w, 7.25m, w:+4.9), and his high jump effort of 6-3 1/2 - less than an inch shy of his personal best - came on a five-step approach that was half the steps of his normal run-up.

However, Lorenzo's day ended with a disappointing 400 (50.11), while his middle event, the shot put, (42-0 3/4) was nearly three feet under his personal best.

'It was a roller-coaster day - some things went really well, and I bombed on a couple,' Lorenzo said. 'I had a really good start in the first two events, the 100 and long jump. Then I felt really off in the shot put warm-ups, and it got worse from there. But I finished the first day in one piece, and will be ready to go tomorrow.'

In fact, Lorenzo's opening day almost ended prematurely as a right hamstring cramp raised concern in his high jump warm-ups (the day's fourth event).

'I was cramping on every single high jump attempt,' Lorenzo said. 'I opened low - at 5-10 - and I wasn't sure I was going to make even that. To clear 6-3 1/2 jump off a short approach really surprised me.'

However, the day's final event, the 400, proved a stark contrast as Lorenzo missed an opportunity to challenge for the scoring lead as he ranked fifth-fastest of the 19 entrants (50.11), although his all-time decathlon personal best of 48.06 ranks among the field's best.

'I've never run a 400 that slow in the past six years, anywhere,' Lorenzo said. 'I don't know what happened. The only thing I can guess is that I had to keep moving during the high jump to keep my hamstring loose, and I might have spent too much energy and not had enough rest. Still, I should have been able to run a faster 400 in a hurricane.'

Among his other events, his long jump was the third-best of the day (23-9 1/2), his high jump (6-3 1/2) and 100 (10.87w) rated sixth-best, and his shot put seventh-best (42-0 3/4).

'It was a weird day, but it's over and I'm looking forward to trying to score as close to 4,000 points tomorrow,' Lorenzo said. 'I got two personal bests today so I know I'm not out of shape. Everything's been going well in practice, except the shot put which hasn't felt quite right technique-wise. I'll just go back tonight and get some fluids and a massage and get ready for tomorrow.'

After redshirting the 2002 outdoor season with a quad muscle injury, Lorenzo won his last collegiate decathlon in Eugene - the 2001 NCAA Championships - on May 30-31 that year, then competed again later that summer in the 2002 World University Games (ninth, 7,565).

Wednesday's event also featured the debut of two new Duck decathletes. Redshirt sophomore Andy Young ranked 16th among the 19 events with his first-day tally of 3,417 points, and redshirt junior transfer Gabriel LeMay tallied was forced to withdraw with a leg injury that occurred during the fourth event of the day, the high jump, and tallied 2,149 points in the first four events.

Young posted opening day marks of 11.38w in the 100, 21-8 3/4 in the long jump, 33-8 3/4 in the shot put, 6-1 1/4 in the high jump and 51.81 in the 400. LeMay posted marks of 11.08w in the 100, 21-4 1/4w in the long jump, 41-10 1/2 in the shot put, and 6-0 in the high jump.

Overall in the event, Auburn's Maurice Smith leads the field with 4,143 points, ahead of Central Michigan's Dana Thomas (second, 4,055), Lorenzo (third, 3,961) and Wichita State's Jens Lakoschat (fourth, 3,917). Smith clocked the day's second-best long jump (24-3 1/2) and high jump (6-4 3/4), the second-fastest 400 (49.39) and third-fastest 100 (10.87).

Looking ahead to Thursday's events, the Duck decathletes wrap up action, and other men's entries include hurdler Eric Mitchum, triple jumper Derek Strubel, the sprint medley and 4x400. Featured Duck women's entries include high jumper Jenny Brogdon, pole vaulter Georgette Moyle, discus thrower Jordan Sauvage, triple jumper Amanda Brown, sprinter Heather Murtaugh, hurdler Abby Andrus and the 4x400 relay.
