April 2, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. - Former Washington State golfer Tasha Browner will compete in the Ladies Professional Golf Association's Office Depot Championship in her hometown of Tarzana, Calif., April 4-6.
Browner, who hails from Tarzana, received one of only two sponsor's exemptions to compete in the tournament. The three round, 54-hole event will be held at the par 72, 6,394 yard El Caballero Country Club.
'This is unbelievable; it couldn't get any better than this,' said Browner. 'Most of the top players in the world are competing in this event and it will be great to see how I compare to them.'
The tournament will be televised on ESPN2, Friday (April 4) from 3-5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday (April 5-6) from 5-7 p.m. All times are Eastern.
'We are very excited for Tasha,' said WSU Head Golf Coach Walt Williams. 'Tasha is a tremendously hard-worker who has prepared herself to play professionally on the LPGA tour. It is exciting for her to get an opportunity. I think it is great for her and great for WSU.'
The 144-player field is scheduled to comprise the top players in the LPGA Tour including Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, defending champion Se Ri Pak and host Amy Alcott.
Browner, who played behind Sorenstam's group in a practice round, is scheduled to tee off at 7:40 a.m., Friday. She is currently a member of the Futures Tour, the developmental tour of the LPGA. Browner is scheduled to compete in 15 of the 17 events on the Futures Tour with her sights set on earning a LPGA Tour card.
Browner's appearance on the LPGA Tour adds to her already impressive resume. She finished her WSU career with a dozen top-10 finishes placing her at the pinnacle of the school's all-time list in that category. In addition, Browner, a 2001 All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention Selection, reached the NCAA Championships in each of her final three seasons and participated in the 2001 United States Women's Amateur.
Browner will not be the first Cougar to play in the LPGA Tour. Jo Ann Washam, a 1972 WSU graduate and Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, played in the LPGA from 1973-1989, winning three events.
