Women of Troy Are Back On Top

April 2, 2003

TAMARAK, N.J. - The USC women's tennis team reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the most recent Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on March 31.

The Trojans move back to the top spot after dropping to No. 3 last week. Stanford remains at No. 2 and California moved two spots into a tie with Stanford. The ITA uses a computer formula to determine its rankings. The Women of Troy have a 92.30 average and Stanford and Cal each have 90.16 averages. Rounding out the top-five are No. 4 Duke (which was No. 1 last week) and No. 5 Florida.

USC will host both Stanford and California this week at Marks Tennis Stadium, pitting No. 1 versus No. 2 on consecutive days. The Women of Troy welcome the Cardinal on Friday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m. and the Bears on Saturday, April 5, at noon.

Four different teams have been ranked No. 1 this season (USC, Duke, Florida and Stanford), which is one more than the total number of teams that had been ranked No. 1 since 1996 (Stanford, Florida and Georgia).

Under eighth-year head coach Richard Gallien, the 2003 Women of Troy are 17-1 overall this season and 4-0 in the Pac-10. Their only loss was to then-ranked No. 2 Florida on Feb. 8 in the USTA/ITA Indoor Championship semifinals.
