Beavers Lose Series Opener At Washington

April 4, 2003

SEATTLE, Wash. - Oregon State's Chris Biles pushed his hitting streak to nine games and Aaron Mathews saw his first action since the second game of the season but the Beavers lost to Washington 10-4 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

The Beavers (13-14 overall, 1-3 Pac-10) and Huskies (20-9, 2-2) continue their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Biles extended his streak with a two-run single in OSU's three-run third inning; that drew the Beavers back within 4-3. But Washington scored three times in both the fourth and fifth innings to retain control.

Mathews, who last season earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball newspaper, pinch-hit in the eighth inning and remained in the game in centerfield. He had not played since Feb. 8, when he was hit by pitch in the second inning; his 14-game hitting streak that dated back to last season ended when he flied out in his only plate appearance on Friday night.

OSU's Ben Rowe pitched seven innings for his third consecutive start, and the junior righthander was victimized by four unearned runs brought about by two passed balls. Rowe, whose record fell to 3-2, allowed 12 hits and walked two while striking out four.

Washington scored a single run in the first inning and had a chance to add to that but OSU third baseman Brad Mellinger made a diving stop and strong throw to rob Chad Boudon of a hit and end the inning.

The Huskies then came up with three runs in the bottom of the second. Rowe retired the first two hitters and got a third strike by the last hitter in the order, Brent Lillibridge, but the ball got past Richie. On the next two pitches, Tila Reynolds singled and Greg Isaacson drove a three-run homer to right-center to make it 4-0.

OSU responded in the top of the third as Pietsch doubled to left-center to drive in one run and Biles blooped a two-run single down the leftfield line. Pietsch's double was the 35th ofhis career, tying him for eighth place on the Beavers' all-time list of career leaders.

Washington tacked on three more runs - one unearned - in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-3. Three more runs in the bottom of the fifth put the Huskies in front 10-3.

The Beavers had a big chance in the bottom of the sixth as Husky starter Sean White walked Tony Calderon and Paul Richie, and reliever Trent Baysinger was greeted by a Mellinger single that loaded the bases with none out. But facing the top of the order, Baysinger fanned Jacoby Ellsbury and Chris Kunda; Andy Jarvis then singled home a run as part of his 3-for-4 day, but Pietsch then grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

White got the win to imrove to 5-3, going five innings and allowing four runs (four earned) on five hits and six walks while striking out two. Baysinger went the rest of the way for his second save of the season, giving up two hits and one walk while striking out five.
