Cougars Drop Series Opener To Stanford 6-1
April 4, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State dropped its home opener to No. 4 Stanford 6-1 Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field, despite a solid pitching effort from starter Tony Banaszak.
Banaszak (1-7) pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on seven hits in the losing effort for the Cougars (9-20 overall, 1-3 in the Pac-10). John Hudgins (5-2) also went the distance, surrendering one run on seven hits in notching the win for the Cardinal (19-10, 5-2).
The Cougars stayed close early, allowing single runs in the top of the third and the fourth innings, falling behind 2-0. Stanford then erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open.
In the top of the sixth, the Cardinal had just two hits, but two Stanford batters reached on walks and two were hit by Banaszak. All four players ended up scoring.
Banaszak settled down afterward, allowing just one hit the rest of the way.
The Cougars had several opportunities to cut into the Cardinal lead.
In the fourth, Grant Richardson doubled with one out, but the next two batters, Falkenborg and Baeder, grounded out.
With one and two men on base in the eighth, Farrar grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Cougars also had the lead-off man reach base in five innings, but failed to score four times.
The three-game series continues tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Cougars are expected to send sophomore Bryce Chamberlin to the mound.
