April 4, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Oregon State junior Kelly Ferris continued her strong play this spring as she carded a 75 in the opening round of the PING/ASU Invitational at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course Friday afternoon.
As a team, the Beavers shot 306 and are tied with No. 17 Washington for 12th among the field of 16 teams - eight of which are ranked 17th or higher nationally. OSU also leads No. 15 Tulsa, Oregon and Northern Arizona with 18 holes to play Saturday and Sunday.
Ferris, who has cut more than five strokes from her fall scoring average, is tied for 35th among the field of 91 golfers. Ferris hails from nearby Albany, Ore.
'As a team, we hit the ball pretty well today,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'Out putts just weren't falling, and that was the difference between a 306 and a 296. We didn't make a lot of three-putts, but we just didn't make a lot of putts in general. They're playing well though, and they're feeling pretty good.'
UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas blistered the layout for a 6-under-par 66 to forge a two-shot lead over Jessica Reese of Texas.
UCLA also sits atop the team leaderboard with a score of 6-under 282; the Bruins lead Texas by three shots. A pack of four teams - host Arizona State, New Mexico State, Stanford, and San Jose State are tied for eighth at 302, four shots ahead of OSU.
