No. 2 Cal (16-2, 3-0) Blows Past No. 7 UCLA, 6-1, Wins Eleventh Straight
April 4, 2003
Los Angeles, Calif. - The No. 2 California women's tennis team (16-2, 3-0, Pac-10) earned its 11th consecutive victory this afternoon with a 6-1 win over the No. 7 UCLA Bruins at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles. The Bears 11-match winning streak is the program's longest such stretch since the 1993 team won 15 straight. Cal's 16-2 record after 18 matches is its best since a 17-1 start in 1987 when the squad accumulated a 25-4 overall record en route to a NCAA Quarterfinal appearance.
After dropping a pair of matches to the Bruins in 2002, the Bears exacted revenge this afternoon in Los Angeles. The top four singles courts and the top doubles courts all involved ranked players on both sides of the net.
UCLA claimed the doubles point by starting off winning two doubles matches and pushing a third into a tiebreaker. No. 41 Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt missed their chance to join the 20-win club, suffering an 8-5 decision to Laura Gordon and Sara Walker on court two, snapping the Cal duo's four-match win streak. Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch didn't fare much better, ending their consecutive win streak at five with an 8-6 loss to Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild. On the top court, Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir led No. 5 Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones, 8-7, but the Cal duo came back to win the match 9-8(3) to extend their win streak to nine.
The Bruins won four of the first six singles sets, but Cal gained momentum and swept the afternoon's second half. No. 9 Kops-Jones won her sixth straight with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision over No. 10 Walker while No. 36 Fusano upset No. 23 Carleton on court two, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, for her 19th victory of the season. On court three, No. 57 Jacobs continued her torrid play, besting No. 58 Wild, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Jacobs has emerged victorious in 10 consecutive matches and leads the Bears with 15 dual wins (15-2).
On the back three courts, California's No. 90 Lynch improved to 9-7 in dual match play with her upset victory over No. 79 Gregg, 6-3, 6-2. Havlicek beat Gordon 6-3, 6-0 on court five, while on court No. 6, Scheldt beat Anya Loncaric 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, to earn her ninth straight decision.
Cal returns to action Saturday, April 5 as the Bears take on top-ranked USC at noon at the Marks Tennis Center in Los Angeles.
