No. 9 Cal In Third After Hot Start at PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Sarah Huarte fired a two-under 70 in the opening round of the PING/Arizona State Invitational to lead No. 9 California to third place Friday at Karsten Golf Course. The Golden Bears fired a strong team score of even-par 288 and find themselves six strokes behind No. 16 UCLA (282) and three back of No. 4 Texas (285) with two rounds to play.
Cal's first-round team score is its best of the spring and lowest since carding a 285 at the Kent Youel Invitational in October.
Rounding out the Top 5 teams are No. 6 Arizona (294), No. 5 USC (296) and No. 11 New Mexico (296).
Huarte, who is tied for third, wasn't the only Bear performing well on the links today. Senior Vikki Laing carded a 72 to stand in a tie for 10th. Junior Claire Dury and freshman Sophia Sheridan are knotted in 15th after firing rounds of 73, and senior Ria Quiazon is tied for 28th with a 74. Competing as an individual, junior Anna Temple also posted a 73 to tie for 15th.
UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas shot a minus-six 66 to hold a two stroke lead over Texas' Jessica Reese.
The second round tees off tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. MT.
