Arizona Men's Tennis Upsets No. 11 Washington, 4-3

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 52 Arizona men's tennis team won its third straight match Saturday, April 5, upsetting No. 11 Washington, 4-3. Arizona lost the doubles point, but battled back by winning four of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Five of the six singles matches went into the third set. The victory improves Arizona to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10, while the loss drops Washington to 14-4 overall and 0-4 in the Pac-10.
Washington swept the doubles matches earning the doubles point. Junior Whi Kim and sophomore Paul Warkentin fell to Ari Strasberg and Alex Vlaski in the No. 1 position, 8-6. On court two, sophomore Colin O'Grady and freshman Roger Matalonga lost to Matt Hanlin and Dillon Ruby, 8-3. Washington's pair of Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler defeated junior Carl Hagman and freshman Daniel Andrus in the No. 3 slot, 8-4.
In singles action, Arizona earned wins on courts two, three, four and six to earn the team victory. Hagman upset the No. 19-ranked Matt Hanlin on court two, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Warkentin defeated Fred Sundsten in the No. 3 position, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. On court six, Andrus beat Nick Weiss, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Clinching the match for Arizona was Matalonga who defeated Christoph Palmanshofer in the No. 4 slot, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Kim lost to the No. 8-ranked Alex Vlaski, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. On court five, O'Grady fell to Dillon Ruby, 6-4, 6-3.
Arizona will next travel to Berkley, Calif., when they face California, Friday, April 11. The action is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
