Beavers Can't Overcome Early Mistakes

April 5, 2003

SEATTLE, Wash. - After digging itself a hole in the early innings, OSU rallied in the late innings but fell short in a 9-8 loss at Washington in Pacific-10 baseball on Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. The Beavers, trailing by four runs after five innings, put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth but couldn't push it across.

OSU (13-15 overall, 1-4 Pac-10) and Washington (21-9, 3-2) finish their series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Chris Biles extended his hitting streak to 10 games for Oregon State, which outhit the Huskies 15-10. Andy Jarvis went 3-for-4 to move into third place on the Beavers' all-time list of career hits leaders; his 203 hits jumped the senior first baseman past Joe Gerber (201, 1997-2000) and he now trails only Brian Barden (231, 2000-02) and Ken Bowen (206, 1984-87).

Aaron Mathews made his first start since the second game of the season and picked up a first-inning single to help OSU to a pair of first-inning runs. Seth Pietsch's groundout scored Jacoby Ellsbury and Mathews later scored on a wild pitch by UW starter Jeff Petersen to make it 2-0. The Beavers extended the lead to 3-0 in he second inning when Ellsbury scored Chris Kunda with a two-out single.

OSU committed a pair of errors behind sophomore righthander Kenny Anderson in the bottom of the second, though, opening the door for six unearned runs that put Washington in front 6-3. Chris Biles doubled home a pair of runs in the top of the third to bring the Beavers within 6-5; Oregon State then had runners at first and third with one out after Tony Calderon singled as part of his 3-for-4 day, but Biles was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run on Kunda's fly to center to end the inning.

Washington went up 9-5 with a three-run bottom of the third, with Anderson being knocked out of the game by Tila Reynolds' two-run double. Junior lefty Nathan Pendley then walked the first two hitters he faced and the Huskies stole three bases - including a double steal that sent Reynolds home with the final run. All nine UW runs scored with two out.

Pendley then gave the Beavers their chance to get back in the game, not allowing a run over the final five innings. In that time, he gave up four hits and two walks while striking out six.

Oregon State picked up a run in the top of the sixth against UW reliever David Dowling, then got two more in the seventh on run-scoring singles by Calderon and pinch hitter Kerisi Reynolds to make it 9-8. The Beavers still had the bases loaded, but reliever Will Fenton struck out pinch hitter Jake Postlewait to end the inning.

OSU put the tying run on base when Webber walked to lead off the ninth; he was sacrificed to second by Calderon and the Beavers were perhaps within a hit of tying the game. Fenton then fanned Kunda and Paul Richie, though, to earn his sixth save of the season.

Anderson took the loss to drop his record to 1-3 this season, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing nine runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. Petersen improved to 2-2 as he worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up six runs (all earned) on 10 hits and one walk while striking out three.
