April 5, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - Eleventh-ranked Washington men's tennis (14-4 overall, 0-4 Pac-10) suffered its second-straight upset, falling to No. 52 Arizona by a close 4-3 margin in Pac-10 action in Tucson, Ariz., Saturday afternoon. The setback was the fourth-straight conference loss for the Huskies, who opened the season with a school record start of 14-0.
Washington opened the contest on a high note, sweeping all three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Senior Ari Strasberg and sophomore Alex Vlaski picked up an 8-6 win in the No. 1 position, while seniors Matt Hanlin and Dillon Ruby cruised to their 15th dual win at No. 2. After losing their first dual match of the season vs. ASU, Friday, the sophomore tandem of Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler bounced back with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles vs. the Wildcats.
The tides quickly turned for the Huskies during the singles portion of the competition, as the Wildcats posted four wins, led by Roger Matalonga's clinching victory over Palmanshofer at No. 4 singles. Washington battled through all four losses, taking each match to three sets.
Vlaski notched a win at No. 1 singles over Whi Kim, 6-7, 6-5, 7-5, while Ruby won in straight sets at No. 5 singles over Colin O'Grady, 6-4, 6-3.
Washington looks to snap its four-match losing skid when it takes on USC, Friday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m., followed by a contest with UCLA, Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
