Sarah Hyatt's Two-Run Home Run Lifts No. 3 Washington Over No. 12 Arizona State
April 5, 2003
SEATTLE. - A two-run home run by freshman Sarah Hyatt (Sedro-Woolley, Wash.) lifted the third-ranked Washington softball team (33-5-1, 1-3 Pac-10) over No. 12 Arizona State, 2-1.
The Sun Devils took the 1-0 lead in the third inning on four hits. After starting the inning with a botched sacrifice bunt that led to a double-play, ASU strung three singles together to score Val Sevilla.
Arizona State ace Desiree Serrano kept the Huskies off balance through five innings, giving up just one hit until Hyatt blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth. The homer scored Dena Tyson (Corona, Calif.) who had reached base on a walk and marked the sixth of the season for Hyatt.
Junior hurler Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) relived Husky started Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) for the final two outs in the seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts to seal the Washington victory. The save was the fourth of the season for Bollinger and the 11th of her career to set a Pacfic-10 Conference and UW record.
Boek (15-1) earned the win as she scattered five hits and struck out three batters. Serrano (16-6) took the tough loss as she gave up two hits and struck out six. She also walked 10 Huskies who stranded nine runners on the day.
The Dawgs and Sun Devils square off again on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at the Husky Softball Stadium.
