Women's Golf Off To 17th Annual Utah Dixie Classic

What's Happening This Week: The Washington State women's golf team is off to the 17th annual Utah Dixie Classic at the Par 72, 5,882 yard Sunbrook Golf Course at St. George Utah Apr. 7-8...Teams will shoot 27 holes Monday, Apr. 7 at 8 a.m., followed by the final 27 holes Tuesday, Apr. 8 starting at 8 a.m....last years team champion was UC-Irvine.
Field: The 23-team field will consist of BYU, Boise State, Long Beach State, UC-Irvine, Colorado State, Colorado, Denver, Hawaii, Idaho, Idaho State, Mesa State, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, UNLV, Portland State, San Diego State, San Francisco, Weber State, Wyoming, Campbell, Cal-State Northridge and Washington State.
Head Coach Walt Williams On The Utah Dixie Classic: 'This is an opportunity for us to play against another tough field after facing an extremely challenging tournament at the Bruin Classic. Kim continues to get stronger and better everyday and I am very pleased that she received the College National Player of the Week award for the second time in only two years.'
Last Week At The Bruin Classic: The women's golf team finished in 13th place at the Bruin Classic at the Par-72, 6,270 yard Robinson Ranch Golf Course at Santa Clarita, Calif. Maria Kostina (76-80-74, +14) led the Cougars with a tie for 23rd place and garnered her fourth consecutive Top 25 finish to start out her young WSU career. Kim Welch (74-80-81, +19) finished in a tie for 34th along with Jay-Lee Longbottom (75-81-79, +19), followed by Katharine Dorris (85-83-81, +33) at a tie for 78th, and Stephanie Parsley (88-88-82, +42) at a tie for 89th. Washington State shot a final round score of 315, improving their round total by nine strokes over the second, and finishing ahead of Pac-10 rival Oregon.
Marking the Scorecard: WSU moved up 3 spots and now ranks 65th as a team according to the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index ...the Cougars are ranked 69th in the Div. I head-to-head rankings on Golfstat.com...Kim Welch ranks 108th in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual performance index.
Sq-Welch-ing The Competition: For the second time in her young collegiate career, Welch has been recognized with the College National Player of Week by GolfWorld magazine for their March 21 issue...Welch has been on a tear and already has matched her total Top 10 and broken her total Top 25 finishes for all of last year...Welch is just one Top 10 finish away from breaking the career record set by Tasha Browner at 12...Welch has lowered her scoring average by nearly two full strokes (76.1 to 74.2) from last season...Welch is ranked 50th toward the Women's Golfstat Cup, an award given to the best female golf performers by golfstat.com....Welch is ranked eighth in the nation for Par 4 scoring at 4.13.
From Russia With Love: In her first three events as a Cougar, Kostina placed in the Top 3 every time with a tie for second at the Inland Collegiate, a second place finish at the Lady Moc Classic, and a third place finish at the Duck Invite, and with her 23rd place finish last week at the Bruin Classic, now has four consecutive Top 25 finishes...Kostina is ranked 122nd in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual performance index...Kostina comes to the Cougars after having been one of the most successful Russian golfers over the last few years...Kostina was recognized by Golf Digest Magazine as 'The Best Russian Golfer' in 1999, 2001, and 2002.
