Beavers Tie For 13th At PING/ASU Invitational

The Oregon State women's golf team shot a 309 on Sunday in the final round of the PING/ASU Invitational to finish with a total of 919 and a tie for 13th.

The Beavers' overall score at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course was the third lowest three-round total in OSU's nine tournaments this year, and matched No. 17 Washington's total.

Alex Lucio led OSU with a 76 Sunday and a career-best 228 overall to tie for 41st. Lucio's 228 topped her former standard by four strokes. The sophomore's scores could have been lower, but for two water balls in her final round.

Ninth-ranked California edged No. 4 Texas for the win by one stroke with a 12-over-par 876.

The top four teams in the 16-team field, which featured eight squads ranked 17th or better, were separated by one stroke each. UCLA, No. 16, was third at 878 and No. 5 USC placed fourth at 879.

OSU's individuals played steady tournaments, with none finishing higher than 41st and none worse than 63rd.

Stacie Ferguson carded her third straight 77 to join teammate Kelly Ferris, who shot a 77 as well Sunday, in a tie for 53rd at 231.

Ashlei Pendleton closed with an 80 and finished at 232, while Laura Skinner shot 79 Sunday and totaled 233.

Playing in her first tournament of the spring, freshman Leah Whiting shot a 77 Sunday to finish tied for 79th.

'We played a pretty consistent tournament on a challenging course, for the most part,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'But it's just not quite good enough if we want to compete with these team. We need to step up our mental toughness and learn from our mistakes. This is a very motivated group.'

UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas held on to her second-round lead for a four-shot win with a 209.OSU plays in the Stanford Invitational April 12-13 before hosting the Pacific-10 Championships April 24-26 at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
