Softball Drops Game With No. 13 Stanford, 10-1
April 6, 2003
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Oregon State's softball squad dropped a 10-1 five-inning Pacific-10 Conference game to No. 13 Stanford University on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal (28-14; 2-4) pounded 11 hits in the contest and held the Beavers (25-18; 1-6) to just one run after OSU had tallied a school record 15 runs less than 24 hours earlier.
A lead-off double by Catalina Morris proved costly for the Beavers as Stanford garnered an early 1-0 advantage in the opening inning. The Cardinal added three more runs in the second, capitalizing on a pair of hits and knocking OSU starter Amy Klever from the circle.
Oregon State struggled from the plate, getting just one ball out of the infield over the first three innings and tallying only one hit on a bunt single by Shannon Sorg.
The onslaught continued for the Cardinal in the bottom half of the third, as Stanford used four hits and an OSU error, to score five runs and extend its lead to 10-0.
Kelly Petersen blasted a lead-off shot over the fence in left-center field to get the Beavers on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. The home run was Petersen's sixth of the season and second in as many days. Shelly Prochaska looked to make it back-to-back long balls for the Beavers but her deep shot was caught at the wall in left field.
Petersen tallied her second hit of the contest with a two-out fifth inning double but the Beavers could not capitalize. OSU left seven runners stranded on base in the game.
The Beavers return home for the first time in a month to face top-ranked UCLA on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.
