Softball Falls to Arizona, 5-1
April 6, 2003
LOS ANGELES - UCLA fell to Arizona on Sunday by a score of 5-1, despite a 12-strikeout performance in the circle by Keira Goerl and a seventh inning solo home run by senior Natasha Watley. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 32-4 (4-2 Pac-10), while Arizona improves to 37-3 (6-0 Pac-10) and looks to take over the top spot in the national rankings this week.
In the bottom of the first, two-out singles by Tairia Mims and Claire Sua gave the Bruins two base runners, and a fly ball to left field by Stephanie Ramos looked like it was going to drop for a UCLA run, but Autumn Champion made a diving catch to end the Bruin threat.
Arizona scored its first run of the day on a double steal with two outs in the second inning, a run that held the 'Cats to the seventh inning.
UCLA threatened again in the third inning with a lead-off double down the right field line by Natasha Watley. Watley advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Caitlin Benyi, but was unable to score from 60 feet away.
The Wildcats recorded three more hits and did the remainder of their damage in the seventh inning, as Crystal Farley posted a lead-off single, followed by a bunt single from Autumn Champion. Courtney Fossatti then reached on a fielder's choice, but the throw to the bag at third was bobbled, leaving the bases loaded for Lovieanne Jung. Jung delivered, crushing her league-leading 20th home run of the season into the scoreboard in left field.
Watley came up with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for the Bruins and recorded a monstrous home run of her own, easily clearing the batting cage in center field, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins fell to the Wildcats for the second consecutive day, this time by a score of 5-1.
Keira Goerl pitched well for UCLA, recording 12 strikeouts while walking just two batters.
UCLA will return to action on Friday afternoon in Corvallis, OR, with a 2 pm first pitch at Oregon State. The Bruins will then travel to Eugene, OR, for weekend games at Oregon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
