Wildcats Win Final Non-Conference Series With 9-4 Victory Over Miami (Ohio)
April 6, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 21-ranked Arizona baseball team closed out its final non-conference series of the season with a 9-4 win over Miami (Ohio) at Frank Sancet Field on Sunday. The win handed Arizona a two-games to one win in the three-game set and improved its record to 24-11 for the season. Miami fell to 12-14-1 with the loss.
Van Houten continued to tear into the Miami pitching staff with a 3 for 4, 6-RBI day at the plate on Sunday. The outfielder, who was on deck in Arizona's final at-bat, fell a double short of hitting for the cycle in the game. He finished the weekend series 9 for 13 (.692) at the plate with two triples, a home run, eight RBIs and five runs scored.
Meanwhile, Rierson (6-1) held the Redhawks in check over eight innings on the mound to pick up his team-high-tying sixth win of the season. The right-hander gave up just one run on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He combined with a solid Wildcat defensive effort to strand 11 Miami players on base over the eight innings of work.
The Wildcats, who have just three single non-conference games remaining on the schedule, return to Pac-10 play next weekend when they host the Washington Huskies for three games at Sancet Field. First pitch for the series opener on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
