Women of Troy Finish Strong At San Diego Crew Classic

April 6, 2003

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The USC women's rowing team finished strong on the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay, as both the Varsity Eight and JV Eight crews placed fourth in the grand finals of their respective races. The Women of Troy's Novice Eight placed ninth in their division for their best-ever performance at the two-day regatta.

Racing for the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the women's Varsity Eight race was the most thrilling of the day and culminated in a photo finish. The race was close from the start and for the first 1,000 meters the Trojans trailed only Washington. The Huskies maintained their lead over the final 100 meters until Cal surged at the finish line to capture the win in 6:42.5. After Washington crossed the finish second, USC was narrowly beat by Stanford in the sprint for third place. The Trojans finished fourth in 6:46.94. Only .08 seconds separated first and second place, while third and fourth place was decided by less than two seconds.

Cal's victory marked only the second time in race history that Washington failed to capture the Jessop-Whittier Cup. The first was in 2001 when USC upset the Huskies for the title.

The JV Eight race was also decided in the final stretch as Washington overtook California with 300 meters remaining and finished in 6:48.8. Cal eventually fell behind Washington State to finish third (6:50.15) and the Trojans followed in 7:03.30 for fourth. USC's JV Eight performance matched its best-ever finish, having also placed fourth in 2001.

The Women of Troy's Novice Eight, which last season finished sixth in the Petite Final for 12th place overall, made dramatic improvements this season for an unexpected best-ever performance in their race. Racing for places seven through 12 in the Petite Final, USC (7:19.74) finished a narrow seven-tenths of a second behind second place UC Davis (7:19.05) for ninth place overall. St. Joseph's won the race in 7:14.3 to finish seventh overall.

The Trojans' next outing will be on Saturday, April 26, when they face Loyola Marymount and SMU in dual races at Marina del Rey's Ballona Creek.
