April 7, 2003
Northridge, Calif. - The men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Cal-State Northridge Six-Way Meet this past Saturday and while gusting winds tended to distort many of the events on the track, it did not prevent another fine performance by the Trojan throwers.
Freshman Adam Midles won the discus (168-11) and hammer (202-5), both personal bests and both NCAA regional qualifying marks. On the women's side, junior All-American L'Orangerie Crawford had another strong outing, winning the shot put with a throw of 53-7 and finishing second in the hammer (and first among collegians) with a throw of 207-1.
Senior Amy Thiel chipped in a PR to win the discus (161-9), moving into seventh on the all-time USC discus chart.
Sophomore Allen Simms continued his outstanding season, winning the long (25-8 3/4) and triple jumps (50-10 3/4). Both marks were wind-aided.
Senior All-American Natasha Mayers ripped off an 11.16 to win the 100m, but was aided by a 3.3 mph wind. Sophomore pole vaulter Melissa Astete had one of her better career outings as she vaulted 12-8 to place second.
The Trojans are next in action at the Sun Angel Invitational this weekend in Tempe, Ariz.
