April 9, 2003
BERKELEY - After narrowly defeating then No.1-ranked Washington at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday, the University of California earned the top spot in this week's USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll.
Cal garnered 15 first-place votes to earn the No. 1 ranking. In the Division II poll, UC Davis was the unanimous selection for the second week in a row, receiving all five first-place votes. Williams College and Ithaca College shared the top spot in the NCAA Division III Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Williams College received five of the 10 first-place votes, while Ithaca received four.
In the Division I rankings, Princeton took home the remaining six first-place votes to rank third behind Cal and Washington. Stanford and Michigan rounded out the top five.
In the Division II poll, UC Davis was followed by Western Washington and Florida Tech. In Division III, Colby College, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Tufts rounded out the top five. Washington College earned the other first-place vote.
'It is certainly an honor to be ranked at the top nationally after our big win last weekend.' said Cal coach Dave O'Neill. 'But I know that there are a number of great programs that can challenge for the top spot. Things are tight, especially in the Pac-10. This ranking is no crystal ball, and we will have to work extremely hard to stay No. 1.'
