Cardinal Sweep Cal Poly
April 9, 2003
Stanford, Calif. - Freshmen Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) and Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) both went 4-for-7 at the plate to lead the 16th-ranked Stanford softball team to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over visiting Cal Poly, 8-1, 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal pick up their 30th victory of the season to stand at 30-14, while the Mustangs fall to 17-26.
Stanford started the first contest with a bang, putting five runs across the board in the first inning. Morris doubled off the wall and Lappin followed with a single. Consecutive walks by Cal Poly starter Eva Nelson to Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) and Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) scored the game's first run. Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) delivered an RBI single and Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) knocked in two more runs to make it 4-0 Cardinal. Stanford added one more when Meghan Sickler's (Houston, TX) hit was mishandled by the Mustang shortstop.
The Cardinal added three more in the second on Ching's two-run double and Jessica Allister's (Nacogdoches, TX) RBI single for the 8-0 Stanford advantage. Starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) made easy work for the Cardinal fielders, striking out seven in three innings of work.
Carrie Schubert hit a two-out RBI single off reliever Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL) scoring pinch runner Stephanie Payan for Cal Poly's only run of the game. Severson picked up her fourth win of the year, improving to 4-2. Lappin finished 3-for-4, while Bendig went 2-for-3 to lead the Stanford offense. Ching also added a double and three RBI.
The second game started much like the first for the Cardinal. Stanford jumped up on the Mustangs to start the nightcap, owning a 2-0 lead on Allister's double to right center scoring Lappin and Brangham.
LeCocq and Michelle Thiry (Renton, WA) both singled to start the sixth inning off and later scored on Morris and Lappin's base hits for Stanford's final two runs of the game.
Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) got the win, pitching 6.1 shutout innings and scattered three hits. LeCocq finished off Cal Poly, retiring the final two batters in two pitches to give Stanford the 4-0 win. Eight different Cardinal recorded hits, with Morris collecting three of the team's 10.
Stanford will return to Pac-10 action this weekend when they travel to the Arizona schools. The Cardinal will face the top-ranked Wildcats on Friday night and continue with single games against Arizona State on Saturday and Sunday.
