No. 22 Softball Defeats Portland State, 7-2, In First Game Of Doubleheader

EUGENE - The 22nd-ranked University of Oregon softball team hit two home runs and had 10 hits en route to defeating Portland State, 7-2, in the first game of a doubleheader at Howe Field in Eugene Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 19-11 overall, 2-5 Pac-10 while Portland State fell to 11-16, 3-1 Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
'It was great to be at home and to have our offense shine today,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'This was a great way to open our home season and I'm very happy with how we played.'
Oregon third baseman Ashley Richards drove in sophomore Erin Goodell in the bottom of the first inning to begin the scoring and junior catcher Jenn Poore hit her second home run of the season - a three run shot deep over the left field fence - that scored Richards and senior Andrea Vidlund, who was 2-for-3 in the game, to give Oregon a 5-0 lead after one inning. Poore finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored.
The Ducks' offense attacked again in the bottom of the third inning as Richards, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, hit a one-out single to shallow center field and scored on a home run by Vidlund. It was Vidlund's third home run of the season and gave Oregon a 7-1 lead after three innings.
Portland State scored a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI double to left field by Annie Peccia that scored second baseman Megumi Hackett. Portland State added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an Oregon error but the Vikings failed to score in the final three innings.
