No. 22 Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With Portland State; Wins Game Two, 3-2

EUGENE - The No. 22 University of Oregon softball team defeated Portland State 3-2 in eight innings at Howe Field in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. Oregon was perfect on the day, defeating the Vikings 7-2 in the first game. Oregon is now 20-11 overall, 2-5 Pac-10 on the season while Portland State drops to 11-17, 3-1 Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
As per international rules, both teams had a runner placed on second base in the eighth inning. Portland State did not score a run and the Ducks went on to load the bases in bottom of eighth. Oregon senior Lynsey Haij hit a hard shot to Portland State first baseman Erin Stokey and Oregon senior Amber Hutchinson scored the winning run on the error.
Oregon took the early lead again in the second game, going ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by designated player Mari Lyn Petrick that scored senior Andrea Vidlund. Vidlund, who finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, hit her second home run of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend Oregon's lead to 2-0. Vidlund finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI. The senior from Fair Oaks, Calif. also picked up the win for Oregon, improving to 4-1 on the mound this season.
Portland State tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Tiffany McHenry that scored Megumi Hackett and Annie Peccia and neither team broke the tie in sixth or seventh innings forcing the Ducks to play their seventh extra inning game of the season. Oregon is now 6-1 in extra inning games.
The Ducks return to Pac-10 action this weekend, hosting No. 3 Washington at 2 p.m. Friday.
