Beavers Lose To Washington State, 10-6

April 11, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andy Jarvis took sole possession of second place on Oregon State's all-time list of career hits leaders Friday night but the Beavers fell to Washington State 10-6 in the opening game of their Pacific-10 baseball series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Jarvis, who was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in, also moved into a tie for second place on OSU's all-time list of RBI leaders.

Oregon State (15-16 overall, 2-5 Pacific-10) and Washington State (10-23, 2-5) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 noon. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM 1240.

Jarvis, a senior first baseman, now has 209 career hits and trails only Brian Barden (231, 2000-02) on the school's all-time list; his 154 RBIs match Barden, behind only Joe Gerber (169, 1997-2000) in OSU history. Jarvis bumped his batting average to .387 for the season and .467 in Pac-10 games.

Tony Calderon was also 3-for-4 on the night for Oregon State; he's now hitting .400 for the season and .591 in Pac-10 games. The junior infielder has four straight multi-hit games and five in his last six games.

The Beavers put themselves in a hole early against the Cougars, giving up a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Washington State then scratched out single runs against Beaver starter Ben Rowe in the second and third innings to make the lead 4-0.

That was uncharacteristic support for WSU lefthander Tony Banaszak, who entered the game with a 1-7 record despite a 4.27 earned run average. In his nine starts this season, the Cougars had been shut out three times (including 4-0 by Oregon State on March 15) and had scored a total of just 19 runs.

OSU finally broke through against Banaszak in the fourth inning. With two out, Tony Calderon singled and the Beavers put on a hit-and-run play with Levi Webber at the plate; Webber punched an opposite-field homer over the rightfield fence to cut the gap to 4-2.

Washington State blunted the Beavers' momentum in the top of the fifth, though, when Jeremy Farrar doubled with two out and Grant Richardson homered to make it 6-2. Rowe, who had pitched seven innings in each of his last three starts, went 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two.

The Beavers got within 6-3 in the sixth inning when Calderon singled home Chris Kunda. The Cougars scored four times off OSU reliever Mike Ekstrom in the top of the ninth inning, but the Beavers managed a last-gasp rally in the bottom of the ninth.

With two out, pinch-hitter Chris Biles walked and Aaron Mathews doubled; Chris Kunda then reached base on an error that allowed Biles to score. Jarvis then blooped a double into leftfield to drive in both runners and make it 10-6, and Banaszak finally gave way to reliever Nick Kenyon. He got Seth Pietsch to ground out to end the game.

Biles' walk in his only plate appearance kept his hitting streak alive at 12 games. Aaron Mathews was 2-for-5 for his second straight multi-hit game after missing almost two months of the season after being hit by a pitch in early February.

Banaszak got the win with his 140-pitch outing, allowing six runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks while striking out five. Richardson was 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs for the Cougars, while Justin Hart was 3-for-3 with a triple and one RBI.
