April 11, 2003
Tempe, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked California women's tennis team completed its first season sweep of Arizona State since 1999 this afternoon, with a 5-2 victory over the Sun Devils in a conference matchup at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The Bears are off to their best start since the 1994 squad also posted a 17-3 record en route to an 18-4 record and NCAA Quarterfinal appearance.
The Devils claimed the first doubles match as Cindy Sureephong and Lauren Colalillo dropped Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt, 9-8(5), on court two. But the ITA National Doubles Team for the month of March, #3 Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones, won their 11th match in a row on court one - this time with a commanding 8-5 defeat of Mhairi Brown and Adria Engel to tie the doubles matches at 1-1. Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch sealed the deal for the Bears, earning the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Joslynn Burkett and Megan Yeats on court three.
The Bears kept the momentum going on the singles courts, taking four out of six singles matches en route to the 5-2 victory. After a disappointing loss to top-ranked USC last weekend, several Bears players rebounded with a vengeance. #31 Christina Fusano rebounded from her loss at USC with a tidy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mhairi Brown to claim her 20th victory of the year, while #97 Catherine Lynch recorded her fourth consecutive victory, defeating Lauren Colalillo, 6-4, 6-1 on court three.
Nicole Havlicek received a test from Joslynn Burkett on court No. 5, but ultimately claimed the victory with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win. Junior Jody Scheldt also achieved success with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Megan Yeats, recording her 11th straight victory dating back to the March 7 matchup with Arizona.
Junior #53 Jieun Jacobs did not fare as well as her teammates, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Cindy Sureephong on court four, for only her fourth dual match loss of the season.
The best match of the day, however was between #11 Adria Engel and #7 Raquel Kops-Jones. The Cal junior grabbed the early lead, winning the first set 6-1, but Engel seemed to just be warming up as she dug in and plowed through the next two sets, winning both, and taking the 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Cal concludes its four-match road trip with as it challenges Arizona Saturday, April 12 at noon.
