Trojans Rally To Defeat UCLA In 7-6 Victory

LOS ANGELES - Joey Metropoulos scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Friday and the USC Trojans rallied to defeat the UCLA Bruins, 7-6, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. UCLA reliever David Johnson threw a wild pitch on the first pitch to pinch hitter Darin Vieira, ending the game.
USC improved to 16-17 overall and 3-4 in Pac-10 play while UCLA fell to 17-20 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Josh Rummonds (3-2) earned the win after throwing 6 2/3 innings in relief, allowing only one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
The Trojans rallied from a 6-2 deficit, beginning the rally with three runs in the seventh. Freshman catcher Jeff Clement hit an RBI single followed by a two-run double by Metropoulos, who was just 2-for-17 before his at-bat. Michael Moon hit a single to center that bounced past a diving Matt Thayer in the bottom of the eighth and advanced to third. He scored on an RBI single by Spencer Gordon. Gordon went 2-for-3 on the night with three RBI for the Trojans.
Rummonds retired the side in the night, making way for the Trojans in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and Metropoulos on first, Jon Brewster singled to right to advance Metropoulos to third. Moon was intentionally walked to load the bases for Vieira.
UCLA scored a run in the first, two in the second and three in the third. Ryan McCarthy hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the third, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Brandon Averill.
Anthony Lunetta went 0-for-5, snapping his hitting streak at 11 games while Clement went 2-for-5 to push his hitting streak to 11 games.
The series will continue tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start with the series finale on Sunday, also at 1 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Net 2. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
