April 12, 2003
USC (16-17) scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning to post a 7-6 win over the Bruins (17-20) at Dedeaux Field on Friday night.
After a ground out from Jeff Clement, Joey Metropoulos singled to right field to start a late Trojan rally in the ninth. A fly-out would follow and with two outs, Jon Brewster hit his third single of the contest to send Metropoulos to third and continue the inning. David Johnson would intentionally walk Michael Moon before Darin Vieira came to the plate. Metropoulos would score on a wild pitch during Vieira's at-bat to clinch the USC victory.
USC had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth as Moon advanced to third after his single and a two-base error. Spencer Gordon's RBI-single would bring Moon across home to tie the score at 6-6 heading into the ninth.
UCLA had continued its trend of scoring in the first inning, as the Bruins posted a run in the top of the first frame. Preston Griffin led off the contest with a triple to right center field. A sacrifice fly from Matt Thayer would drive him in to give UCLA a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the second, the Bruins would add two runs to their total after Brett McMillan was issued a lead-off walk. Ryan McCarthy followed him, reaching base on an error. A single from Brandon Averill advanced the runners and gave UCLA bases loaded with no outs. Left-fielder Sean Carpenter drove in McMillan with a single to right field, but McCarthy would be thrown out at the plate. Another Bruin sacrifice fly from Griffin, drove in Averill to give UCLA a 3-0 lead.
USC got on the board in the bottom of the inning as a lead-off walk to David Gordon and a single from Brewster started the inning. After a bunt advanced the runners, a single from Spencer Gordon drove in the two runs.
Four straight singles and another sacrifice fly would put three Bruin runs up in the third.
After keeping the Trojans off the board in the middle innings, starter Mike Kunes allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh to drop the Bruin lead to 6-5. A single from Clement drove in the first run before a Metropoulos double drove in two more Trojans. Johnson came in to retire David Gordon for the third out of the inning.
The Bruins and the Trojans will face off in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series tomorrow at Dedeaux Field. Left-hander Wes Whisler will get the start for UCLA. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
