Comments from Mike Riley after Saturday's Scrimmage
April 12, 2003
Corvallis, Ore. - The following comments are from Oregon State Head Football Coach Mike Riley after Saturday's (April 12) scrimmage at Reser Stadium:
Q. What was your rationale in not playing a lot of the projected starters today?
A. 'There was a large handful of starters that we decided to hold back today. We have a pretty good idea of where they are in terms of skills - we need to give opportunities to guys the coaching staff doesn't know as much about. I wanted to see our quarterbacks and how they reacted, we need another guy or two to step up at that position. We also need to find other running backs, other than Steven Jackson. The older guys, the projected starters, we know what they can do. I mean, really, what is a guy like Richard Seigler going to prove in one spring scrimmage? The purpose was to get a little broader view of some players.'
Q. What are your thoughts on how your reserve quarterbacks played today?
A. 'I really thought all three (Adam Rothenfluh, Danny Southwick, Anton Clarkson) handled some things very well. They all executed parts of our offense, they saw some things, and they made some good throws. I was generally pleased with all three of them.'
Q. The secondary is a perceived concern, did you see anything today that pleased you?
A. 'We are playing a little different schemes, but overall they have been very aggressive, which I'm pleased about. We gave up a couple of big plays today, and that is what we can't have, we have to be sounder. In general, for this being the seventh practice, the secondary has looked pretty good.'
Q. What's your plan to get the front line guys ready to go over the next couple of weeks?
A. 'They are going full speed right now. They are getting a lot of work in practice every day. We are looking for efficiency, and we would like to have some semblance of that by the end of spring, but we are also looking at long term goals and setting a foundation.'
Q. Did you see what you wanted to in this first scrimmage?
A. 'Well, I was hoping to come out today and make it look like football. For the most part, I saw some good things. There were some good hits, good runs, nice passes, and receptions. There were some good things today.'
Q. What are your thoughts on the play of Ryan Cole?
A. 'I thought he ran hard today. I thought the first couple of practices he was a little tentative, but at the same time he was learning. I even told Coach Hull (running backs coach) last night that Ryan is running hard of late. He busted through and made some plays on his own today, that's very encouraging.'
Q. Other than James Newson, how is the receiving corps developing?
A. 'There are some good players here, what they have to be is consistent and productive. All of that comes over time. I have seen some great flashes from a number of guys, but we need them to do it day-in and day-out.'
