No. 18 California Places Fourth at NCAA North Central Regionals
April 12, 2003
Salt Lake City, Utah - The California women's gymnastics team (12-5, 2-4) closed the cover on its storybook season this evening, placing fourth at the NCAA North Central Regionals at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Sophomore My-Lan Dodd led all Bears, capturing fourth place in the all-around competition with a 39.275 score.
No. 8 Utah (196.975) took first place honors, while No. 6 Stanford (196.625) claimed second and No. 21 Denver (195.350) third. Utah and Stanford both earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Lincoln, Neb., April 24-26.
The Bears saved the best for last, recording a 49.100 on the floor exercise - the second best team score in the event. Freshman Monique Chang led the charge, taking a fifth place bars finish with a 9.875. Dodd and junior tri-captain Stephanie Kim each posted 9.85s, both good for seventh place finishes.
On bars Cal took its next highest event finish, taking third place in the seven-team field, while hitting close to its season average with a 48.800. Dodd, Chang and junior tri-captain Karissa Chock titled the scales, finishing in a three-way tie for ninth place (9.800). In the last collegiate meet of her four-year career, senior Janet McKnight posted her highest finish of the evening, placing 14th with a 9.775.
On both beam and vault, the Bears posted team marks that were below their season averages. Even thought Cal recorded its lowest team score of the night on beam (48.500), freshman Britani Pittullo achieved a little consolation by tying her career-high mark (9.850) and finishing in a three-way tie for 10th place with teammates Dodd and Chang. Chock checked in next for the Golden Bears, finishing in 18th place with a 9.800.
The team's third-best regular season event according to team averages, the vault turned out to be the Achilles heal of the competition. Cal recorded a team score of 48.625 for a fourth-best score of the field. Dodd and Chock led all Bears with a 15th place finish (9.775).
In the all-around competition, California took solace in posting two Top 10 finishes. Dodd tallied a 39.275 for 4th place, while Chock's 8th place 38.925 was good for a season high.
