Cardinal Beat No. 12 Arizona State 4-1

Tempe, Ariz. - Home runs from Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) and Leah Nelson (Oakland, CA) and a two-hit pitching performance from Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) led the 16th-ranked Stanford softball team to a 4-1 victory over No. 12 Arizona State at Farrington Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal finish the weekend 2-1 to improve to 4-5 in the Pac-10 Conference and 32-15 overall.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, but in the top of the third Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) led off with a base hit to left field. Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) then followed with her sixth home run of the season and her third of the weekend to put Stanford up 2-0.
Cardinal starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) continued to retire the Sun Devils in order, allowing only one hit through the first five innings.
Stanford added another score in the fifth. Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) recorded a two-out single to center and two pitches later stole second. Cassi Braghan (Clovis, CA) lined a single to right center, plating Lappin for the 3-0 Cardinal advantage.
Arizona State put a base runner on in the sixth, but Sorensen got Kristen Farber to pop up to Lappin at short ending the inning. Stanford added one more run in the seventh when Leah Nelson (Oakland, CA) smashed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence, marking her second homer of the season.
Phelan Wright put the Sun Devils on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to left field. Following a Sorensen strikeout, Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) came in and got Carla Strege to fly out to center field.
Sorensen got her 15th win of the year, pitching 6 2/3 innings allowing two hits and fanning nine ASU batters. Morris had two of Stanford's seven hits to lead the Cardinal offensively.
Stanford returns home to host San Jose State on Wednesday, April 16. The doubleheader is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Smith Family Stadium.
