April 13, 2003
Top-ranked Arizona's Crystal Farley drilled a two-out infield single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the runner from third to edge No. 6 California, 1-0, in Sunday's Pac-10 match-up. With the loss, the Golden Bears fall to 34-12 (4-5 Pac-10) as the Wildcats improve to 39-5 (8-1).
The Bears had several scoring opportunities throughout the game, leaving seven runners on base to the Cats' six, collecting three hits to five.
Second baseman Eryn Manahan made a top-notch defensive play to keep the Wildcats scoreless in the sixth inning. With one out and runners at second and third off a single to second base and a double down the right field line, clean up hitter Mackenzie Vandergeest entered the box. Vandergeest hit a grounder to Manahan who tagged out the runner at first and gunned out the runner at third attempting to score.
Manahan then led off the top of the seventh with a line drive base hit up the middle, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer tabbed runners on the corners after her single through the right side, advancing to second off a ground out. The Wildcats forced a second ground out to end the inning leaving the runners stranded.
UA led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk to pitcher Wendy Allen, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out. Farley's first hit of the day came in a timely matter to win the ball game for the Wildcats.
The Bears received base hits from center fielder Kaleo Eldredge, Manahan and Spencer and Lovie Jung led the Arizona bats with two hits.
Kelly Anderson suffered the loss (14-6) tossing 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, four walks and fanning four batters. Allen improved to 11-1, shutting out the Bears with three hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
