No. 2 Bruins Defeat No. 20 Oregon Softball To Split The Weekend
April 13, 2003
EUGENE - Despite a one hour and 15 minute rain delay prior to the fifth inning, the second-ranked Bruins of Los Angeles defeated No. 20 Oregon, 9-3, in front of 348 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. UCLA improved to 34-5 overall, 6-3 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 21-13, 3-7.
Play was halted after the fourth inning with the Bruins leading 6-0 and pitcher Keira Goerl (24-5) holding the Ducks hitless. Following the delay, Oregon found its offense with freshman Beth Boskovich hitting her sixth double of the season. Oregon senior Andrea Vidlund scored Boskovich with a home run deep over the center field fence to put the Ducks on the board. Vidlund, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, homered again - her fifth of the week and third versus the Bruins this weekend - in the seventh inning to cap a stellar week in which she scored eight runs and had eight RBI.
'It was a great feeling to get my offense going,' Vidlund said. 'I had been struggling a little bit and this was a great time to come out of it this way.
UCLA had the early lead after shortstop Natasha Watley walked to lead off the first inning and stole second during Caitlin Benyi's at bat. Benyi singled to advance Watley, who then scored on an Oregon error. UCLA went ahead 2-0 when Benyi scored on a second Duck error. The Bruins added two more runs in the second inning on a two-out home run by Benyi. Benyi hit her second home run of the game in the fourth inning, giving the Bruins a 6-0 lead.
The Bruins added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Claire Sua and a solo shot by Toria Auelua.
Oregon continues home play next weekend, hosting Oregon State at Howe Field Friday at 2 p.m.
